Berat, at the pace of its streets.
A river, hillside houses and a living castle quarter. Set aside a day to let the old town unfold without rushing it.

Begin beside the river
Begin beside the Osum River, then wander into Mangalem and Gorica. White façades and hillside streets give these historic neighbourhoods their character. Take the town a few lanes at a time, looking back occasionally to see how the houses fit together.
Give the castle its own chapter
Berat’s historic centre is part of the UNESCO-listed Historic Centres of Berat and Gjirokastra. In the castle quarter above, homes stand alongside religious monuments. Follow the stone streets, pause at a view, and feel the difference between visiting a monument and walking through a living neighbourhood.
Keep some of the day unplanned
Bring together a neighbourhood walk, a cultural stop and a meal, then let the rest unfold. The pleasure of Berat is often in the intervals: sitting after a climb, following a quieter lane, or seeing the same hillside from the other bank.
